Method to Experience ELESIG Small Grants Project Shalni Gulati & Irmgard Huppe City University & Oxford Brookes University email: Shalni.Gulati.1@city.ac.uk

What we have… Learner experience research – shared in and outside ELESIG A multitude of methodologies used to ask similar questions about how learners experience learning using technologies how learners use technologies for learning … Need to develop further insight into what learners are doing with technologies

questions to ask are Is learner experience research having an impact on practice? Are these studies asking the same questions and getting same results? Are the dominant ways of thinking, i.e. paradigms and theoretical frameworks defining the methods used and hence influencing what results we are getting? What can we learn from researchers in the field about methods to hear the learner voices? What are the challenges in this research? Can methodologies applied help elicit learner voices?

Our aims… To learn from researchers experiences about the challenges in conducting learner experience research To develop an e-resource that existing and future researchers can use to Analyse paradigms and methodologies for learner experience research Elicit links between theoretical frameworks and methods used Conceptualise differences and similarities between research questions, methods and results

Build on the work started by the JISC Learners experiences of e-learning projects

Methods Video interviews Analysis using existing resources Develop an e-book resource with videoed interviews & existing resources, e.g. links to papers, recipe cards, advice on recruitment and ethical considerations Results collated for use by practitioners

Your input is needed: In three groups Researchers Practitioners New Researchers …

Your input is needed: Researchers interview questions we should be asking you? Practitioners what (and how) would you like to know about the research conducted into learners experiences of e-learning? New Researchers what would you like to learn from more experienced researchers in the field?
