Compare United States system of government within the framework of the federal and state structures as well as in how they relate with governmental systems of other nations (CE.C&G.2.5) I can distinguish between different types of government throughout the world and history– monarchy, anarchy, aristocracy, theocracy, democracy, authoritarian/dictatorship.

Anarchy Description – Gov’t does not exist or is not able to enforce laws Example – Iraq after U.S. invasion – Haiti after the earthquake Table of Contents

Dictatorship Description – Gov’t leader takes all power by force – No guarantee of rights for citizens Example – Cuba (Castro) & North Korea (Kim Jong-il) Table of Contents

Absolute Monarchy Description – When the King/Queen has complete power over the gov’t – Divine Right Theory Example – Louis XIV in France Table of Contents

Constitutional (Limited)Monarchy Description – The King/Queen’s power is restricted by a constitution and elected officials – King/Queen is only a ceremonial figurehead Example – Present day England & Japan Table of Contents

Direct Democracy Description – The power of gov’t is controlled directly by the people – Only works on a small scale Example – New England Town Meetings – Ancient Athens Table of Contents

Representative Democracy Description – The people elect representatives who then make decisions for them Example – The United States – Mexico Table of Contents

Theocracy Description – Religious leaders are also the highest governmental authority Example – The Vatican (Pope) & Iran (Ayatollah) Table of Contents
