Grading Student grades can be monitored 24/7 through Home Access Major Grades 40% (Tests, Essays, Projects) Minor Grades 60% (Daily grades, Homework)

Did you know? Studies show that on-level 11 th graders should be reading at least 1.5 million words annually (about 400 pages per month). In a two year study, the two most common factors found in successful people were an knack for networking and a part-time job in high school. The more organized and involved a student is, the more successful he usually is academically.

What are my goals this year? Improve reading skills –Ability to analyze a variety of text –Comfort level in attacking difficult text –Comprehension –Retention Improve writing skills –Be able to write for a variety of purposes –Be able to clearly express ideas –Be able to organize a convincing argument Improve presentation skills –Feel confident in front of an audience –Be knowledgeable in body language, rhetoric, voice projection –Use a variety of presentation programs and technology IMPROVE THINKING SKILLS AND YOUR STUDENT’S ABILITY TO PRESENT THOSE IDEAS

What is a typical day in this class? Agenda Preview (2 minutes) –Objective –Announcements (Encourage your student to get involved) –Plan –Homework Silent Sustained Reading (20 minutes) Reading Workshop (30 minutes) Writing Workshop (30 minutes) Review/Preview (3 minutes)

What should your student have every single day? Independent Reading Book Pen, pencil, paper, highlighter, post it notes Agenda, calendar, or planner of some sort Composition Notebook (left in class) Positive attitude, self-control, and strong work ethic

How much homework will my student receive in this class? The time needed to complete assignments varies greatly depending on use of class time and speed at which he reads. Students should assume there will be 30- 60 minutes nightly. (Strongly encourage your student to do A-day homework on A- day.) Homework and handouts can be found on my website.

What do I need from you? Reading –Encourage Nightly reading –Book donations – If you have books collecting dust at home that a student might enjoy, PLEASE consider donating them to my classroom library Communication –Please contact me as often as you need –Remember that a blank grade means it hasn’t been entered, not that it is missing –I am very open to any suggestions Stay informed and be involved –Activities, testing, PTSA
