4 Reading is a Process too

5  We only remember:  50% of what we read or learned within 1 hour  30% of what read after nine hours  20% or less after one week.

6 Critical Reading  (Writing Acquisition)  Preview the text  What am I dealing with here?  Read and Annotate the text  What thoughts & reactions do I have here?  What don’t I understand?  Reread the text & assess the whole  What’s the writer’s strategy & purpose here?

7 Reading & Annotating  Number the major points (or paragraphs if it’s short)  Underline or highlight sentences that carry the major points  Bracket words you don’t know  Find signal words (Yet, but, however, therefore)  Note what (if any) other sources the writer uses
