What are the Benefits of CCSS? Previously, every state had its own set of academic standards and different expectations of student performance. Consistency Common standards can help create more equal access to an excellent education. Equity All students must be prepared to compete with not only their American peers, but also with students from around the world. Competition Clear and coherent standards will help students (and parents and teachers) understand what is expected of them. Clarity Common standards create a foundation for districts and states to work collaboratively. Collaboration 4 4

A Three-Part Model for Measuring Text Complexity Quantitative dimensions of text complexity: things computer programs measure such as words, sentences, length of words and sentences Qualitative dimensions of text complexity: things human readers measure such as meaning, knowledge base Reader and task considerations: things teachers measure such as the tasks we perform using the text such as what we talk about, what we already know, and the appropriateness of the content. At every grade level, texts can range from Readily Accessible to Very Complex

How are we Transitioning from Current Assessments? 5 th Grade Writing Test 2-3 passages to read Write a synthesis comparing how the passages treat a subject or theme.

Norman Public Schools’ Approach Have moved benchmarks and expectations of reading and math accordingly. Working toward all students being above benchmark now to meet Common Core Standards later. Adding synthesis writing and opinion writing at every grade level in literacy and open response questions in math. Using Treasures as a resources for grade level text and writing tasks for students and Everyday Math to accelerate all students.
