Made of cells A polar bear has all the cells a human has. They have blood cells, skin cells, bone cells, and white blood cells. White blood cells protect polar bears from colds and the flu. Humans are the same way. You can also call them immune cells. People and animals can only have so many. Or not all there cells will function properly. All animals are made of cells.
4
Reproduce Polar bears reproduce with live birth. The female polar bear needs a mate to reproduce. Males choose a female to be his mate. When two polar bears reproduce they will have a new mate the next year. This happens every year. If two mates don’t reproduce one year they are mates the next year. Females start mating at about 4 or 5 years old. Males are ready at about 8,9,or 10 years old.
5
Inherit traits from their parents When two polar bears reproduce, the cub will inherit something from both parents. If a trait does not come from its parents it came from a more distant relative. This is called a recessive trait. The trait like that would come from a grandparent. It would have nothing else to get traits from.
6
Grow and develop Polar bears grow at about a medium speed. They are large animals in size. It takes a polar bear 10 years to reach full size. Cubs are only ¼ the size of adult polar bears. Amount of cells makes how big it needs to be to hold all its needed cells. If it is to large, parts of its body won’t respond to commands. Polar bears live to be 20 to 30 years.
7
Obtain and use energy and nutrients Polar bears must eat food to have enough energy to survive. Polar bears use energy to keep themselves warm. Polar bears eat meat. It hunts for fish to eat and feed its cubs. If it doesn’t, then it won’t survive or its cubs won’t survive. It will also fight seals and eat seals for food. A polar bear will eat off of any other dead animal it will find. A seal weighing 55kg could feed a single polar bear for 8 days.
8
Respond to the environment They use there claws and there teeth. They are big, have large teeth, claws and attitudes. They have few predators besides a man with a very big gun. Fat polar bears usually attack humans Hungry polar bears are known to kill and sometimes eat humans.
9
Maintain a stable environment in their cells and bodies. Polar bears are warmed blooded. Polar bears have transparent fur over black skin. Reflection of the sunlight from the parent hairs makes polar bears seem to be white. The bears' black skin absorbs heat from the sun. The parent fur is made up of hairs called guard hairs. These guard hairs help transfer heat from the sunlight to the polar bear's black skin as a solar heat collector. In turn, the reflection stops the heat being lost from their black skin.
