AGREE OR DISAGREE? ✔ or ✘ Statement Under some circumstances, issues of morality (right vs. wrong) should be put aside for the sake of survival Losing some individual freedom is acceptable if it benefits the community or society as a whole Every country is responsible for its own citizens, and other countries should not get involved in their internal affairs If members of an oppressed society could have the opportunity to live in freedom and wealth, their troubles would be over

“As an action story, the tale of Shin’s breakout and flight is pure The Great Escape, full of feats of desperate bravery and miraculous good luck. As a human story it is gut wrenching; if what he was made to endure, especially that he was forced to view his own family merely as competitors for food, was written in a movie script, you would think the writer was overreaching. But perhaps most important is the light the book shines on an under-discussed issue, an issue on which the West may one day be called into account for its inactivity.” — The Daily BeastThe Daily Beast

"I always say the truth is best even when we find it unpleasant. … Lying is the most personal act of cowardice there is." "Some boys… have to learn the hard way. They have to be broken and mended and broken again until they learn to do what they're told." He kept the blinds closed, even though the windows looked out onto a beautiful walled garden. He didn't want anything new in his life, no matter how beautiful. It didn't matter how intelligent he was. In the end the only thing that mattered was how strong his heart was.

Q&A WITH THE AUTHOR Heather: In your book Speak, you did such a good job of portraying a person who is able to distance herself completely. Was there a time when you felt alone like Melinda? How did you handle it? A few weeks before ninth grade started, I was raped. Because my family was already struggling with a lot, I didn't tell my parents. I became isolated and very depressed. Reading kept me going; I think I read every book in my school library. Joining the swim and track teams helped, too; I think it was a combination of having fun while working out and meeting friends. But what really helped me was the decision to go into counseling and talk to a therapist. I didn't do that until I had kids of my own. Working with the therapist changed my life. I wish I had done it earlier.
