Team work 1. Cross-editorial staff system 2.Multimedia team 3.Virtual team 4.“Newsplex”

Cross-editorial staff system (Ressortübergreifende Teams) Traditional work has been “departmentalized” : Economy in a room and politic in another separated room New Form: political editors work together with economical editors. Exchanging information and thoughts. Enhancing creativity in both fields. More possibility to integrate European topics

Multimedia team After entering the TV station an editor must write a news for TV, anther one for Radio, an article for newspaper and go online. Specialists seat together in the same room, discuss topics, exchange information and insights, using common sources.

...multimedia team… Paul Maidment, “Financial Time”, London: “We’ve created a completely integrated newsroom that works acros print and online, so we don’t have FT.com journalists and we don’t have newspaper journalists. We just gave FT journalists” It is easier and more fitting to decide the kind of news to be used for the right media.

Jerusalem Post multimedia team Print, Online, and Radio journalists work in the same Newsroom with the Editor in chief and the president of News Media.

Virtual team Since more than 400 years editors, freelance, reporters, and all kind of collaborators in the same building with rooms surrounded by walls and just a door. The outcome appeared in the same building. With the virtual journalism of the 21st century journalists travels with Laptop and, write everywhere and transmit their text, sound of pictures from all the places. A centralized newsroom has lost importance.

Kuala Lumpur from 400 to 50 Utusan Malaysia used to be a traditional daily newspaper in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with 400 journalist working in the same building and delivering print and online editions. Since 2001 the system was radically transformed in a “Virtual Newsroom”. I saw it in 2002. It is planed to reach the goal of just 50 journalists working in the central building saving of 500 000 US$ each year. Limited unemploiment.

“Newsplex”, an IFRA Project Infra is an international organization von publishers based in Darmstadt. In 2002 is started a very innovative project, initiated by Kerry Northrup and dealing with “teaching, training and research of cross-media newsgathering, story presentation and multiple- media publishing strategy: video, audio, print, online”

… Newsplex… The “material” for all media are digitally saved and stay to disposal to all the media of the chain, doesn’t matter for the kind of media, papers or inline. The main building was designed by the New Yorker architect Saf Fahim, special expert in creating newsrooms.

Useful systems for communicating Europe All this new ways of making journalism, from Cross-editorial staff system, can be very instrumental in communicating Europe. Interaction between journalist dealing with several fields can provide more opportunities, occasions and motivations to ”catch” European news to be inserted in all kind of reports, story or news. It is important that in in a team a journalist has special interest for European affaires.
