CH. 1.2 Humans Try To Control Nature

Achievements in Technology and Art People of the Old Stone Age were nomads, meaning they wandered from place to place with no permanent settlements. These nomads were also hunter-gatherers, they got their food from hunting animals and gathering plants Early tools were made with stone, bone, and wood

Achievements in Technology and Art Early nomads used items like shells, lions, and bear claws as jewelry Best known Stone Age art are cave paintings found in France and Spain They drew images of wild animals, made paint from charcoal, mud, animal blood In Australia and Africa early nomads engraved pictures on rocks

Neolithic Revolution Neolithic Revolution: agricultural revolution, shift from hunting and gathering (nomads) to farming (permanent settlements) Farming provided a steady source of food, unlike hunting Early humans did not need to be nomads any longer because they did not need to constantly move for their food, it was stationary.

Neolithic Revolution Some groups practiced slash-and-burn farming in the beginning, where they cut trees/grasses and burned them to clear the land, the ashes fertilized the land Humans began to domesticate animals, or tame animals, such as horses, dogs, goats, etc Began to make enclosures for animals, easier to keep and domesticate them

Villages Grow and Prosper Humans began cultivating many different types of food in various areas of the world, especially in fertile river valleys The agricultural village of Catal Huyuk not only grew crops and domesticated animals, but they also had many highly skilled workers, such as potters and weavers. Archeologists also discovered cave paintings, religious shrines, etc, from Catal Huyuk
