Randomized Controlled Trial to Prevent Child Violence Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS)
2
Welcome to Safety Check! Safety Check is the first large-scale intervention study implemented by the PROS network!
3
So, What is Safety Check? It’s a study that examines the effectiveness of an office-based intervention where practitioners will use brief, easy-to-use patient education tools to promote positive child health and development. H Safety Check is in both English and Spanish – and has been pilot tested!
4
Randomization Practices will be randomly assigned to either: GROUP 1 Screen and counsel families about risk factors for child violence, a pressing public health problem. GROUP 2 Screen and counsel families about reading promotion, another important aspect of healthy child development. OR
5
What We Will Ask You To Do At your office, enroll 30 children presenting consecutively for well-child visits: ã15 children 2-5 years of age; and ã15 children 6-11 years of age

13
And, What About the “Practitioner Surveys”? Practitioner Post-Visit Survey (1 minute - after each enrolled patient visit is completed) n Topics discussed with parents n Recommendations made
14
Practitioner’s Time Commitment Safety Check Training Box New PROS Protocol Prior to beginning the study, each site will receive a training box including: ãEasy to follow overview of the study ãTraining audiotapes for practitioner ãTraining videotapes for office coordinator ãExamples of all study materials
15
Practitioner’s Time Commitment To prepare for the study: n You and your office coordinator review training kit materials n You listen to the audiotape and your office coordinator reviews the videotape n You complete training certification form
16
Practitioner’s Time Commitment To prepare for the study: n You need to listen to the practitioner training audiotape to learn about the intervention to which you’ve been assigned n Fax training certification form back to PROS to receive study materials and start the study TIP: Listen to the audiotape multiple times to familiarize yourself with the process
17
Practitioner’s Time Commitment For each enrolled participant, the study will require: n 2-4 minutes to use the screening and counseling procedure n 1 minute to fill out post-visit questionnaire
18
Patient’s Time Commitment n 8-10 minutes to complete pre-visit questionnaire in the waiting room* * Spanish speaking families might need more time to complete this survey n 1 minute to complete the post-visit questionnaire n 10 minutes for follow-up telephone interviews with independent research staff 1 and 6 months after the visit
19
What if My Practice Provides Care to Spanish Speaking Patients? n If you or a member of your staff is fluent in Spanish, you can receive all Safety Check materials in Spanish! Just let PROS know!
20
Benefits of Participation n Help families discover the value of reading aloud with their children n Help prevent violence by counseling families about media use, discipline and safe gun storage n Manuscript review and authorship opportunities n Practice credited in manuscripts n Receive study information from both groups 1 & 2
