INFORMATION CARD PARAPHRASING & QUOTING Smith, John Causes of Lung Cancer Tobacco use, such as smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco, is the leading cause of lung cancer amongst adults between the ages of 35 and 55. Over 25% of social smokers (those who smoke one pack a week) develop lung cancer before the age of 50. “Pregnant mothers who smoke increase the chances that their unborn children will develop lung disease or cancer by 80%.” (pg. 52) Exposure to second-hand smoke can endanger even non-smokers. Pgs. 50-54 Student Name NOTES: Remember that paraphrasing means to summarize a source’s (author’s) words AND ideas by putting them into your own words. Ask yourself, How would I explain this information to my friends or family? Failure to paraphrase effectively is considered plagiarism. When quoting someone from a source who is not the author of the source, remember to include that person’s credentials (what makes him/her an expert?).
