Surgical Robotics The wave of the future By: Jasper Forest
2
Surgical Robotics ● What is a robot? ● What can they add to the medical field?

History Surgical SystemYear Made PUMA 5601985 PROBOT1988 ROBODOC1992 ZUES1998 Da Vinci Surgical System1998
4
Advantages ● Remote surgery, minimally invasive surgery, unmanned surgery. ● More precision, smaller incisions, decreased blood loss, less pain, quicker heal time. ● Reduced duration of hospital stays, transfusions and use of pain medication. ● Better control over surgical instruments.
5
Advantages ● Better control over surgical instruments ● Better view of surgical site. ● Surgeons no longer have to stand throughout the surgery and will not fatigue as quickly. ● Since they are using a robot different surgeons can rotate in and out during on surgery.
6
Disadvantages ● Higher cost and higher upkeep cost for the systems. ● Additional training for doctors to learn new systems. ● During training doctors usually take longer to finish operations than usual. ● Patients may have higher expectations which may cause higher rates of dissatisfaction and regret.
