BIBLIOGRAPHIES Citing Sources To Avoid Plagiarism. 7th Grade- Reading Turner

2 Why do I need a bibliography?
PLAGIARISM is using someone else’s words or ideas without giving proper credit. A BIBLIOGRAPHY gives this person the credit for their research and words.

3 A bibliography is an alphabetized listing of all your sources.
You need this information: Title of book, article, or internet site The author (or authors) when possible The publisher The publication date The place of publication (choose the one closest to where you live)

4 Where do I find this information?
This information is found in the first few pages of the book.

5 Let’s look at three types… Look at your handout.
Book Encyclopedia Internet

6 An example of a book entry:
Author’s last name, first name. Book Title. City of publication: Publishing company, publication date. Important: you must indent the second and third lines of any entry

7 An example of an encyclopedia entry:
“Title of article.” Title of Encyclopedia. Edition. Date of publication. Notice we are still indenting the 2nd and 3rd lines.

8 An example of an Internet source:
“Title of Article.” Version date of publication. Publisher. Date you accessed the website. Website address. Remember to indent those 2nd and 3rd lines.

9 Diagramming a Bibliography
Let’s do this one together… label the author, title, city of publication, publication company, and year published. Otfinoski, Steven. Great Black Writers. New York: Facts on File, Inc, 1994.

10 Try One On Your Own… McKissack, Patricia. Sojourner Truth- Ain’t I a Woman. New York: Scholastic, Inc., 1992. What is the place of publication? What is the title of the book? Who published the book? Who is the author? What year was it published?

11 BOUNCING BIBLIOGRAPHIES
BOUNCING BIBLIOGRAPHIES! Practice Citing Your Sources In Bibliography Format. In your pods, you have book, encyclopedia, and internet sources. Beginning with the one on your desk, write out the bibliography information on your paper according to the rules on your Bibliography Notes (handout). In 3 minutes you will rotate your source to the right and begin again.

12 BIBLIOGRAPHY EXERCISE
On a separate sheet of paper, arrange these 3 sources into the correct format and alphabetical order: Encyclopedia Americana Joel Garreau “Albert Einstein” Edge City 1991 edition Doubleday (publisher) New York 1991 “Women in American History” Britannica Online Version Nov. 1997 Encyclopedia Britannica 10 Mar. 1998
