6.   Obelisks were important in the architecture of the ancient Egyptians/ They were placed, in pairs, at the entrance of temples.  A number of ancient Egyptian obelisks are known to have survived,  These obelisks are now dispersed around the world, and fewer than half of them remain in Egypt.  The obelisk symbolized the sun god Ra, and the Egyptians believed that the god existed within the structure. 13.  Sculptures in Ancient Egypt Sculptures are statues made of clay, stone, or other materials. Most sculptures were statutes of people or gods. What are some examples of sculptures in Ancient Egypt? Huge statutes of gods stood in temples. Smaller statutes of Egyptians that once lived, were placed in tombs along with the mummies. 18. Advances in knowledge What does anatomy mean? Anatomy is the study of the body and the organs. How did Egyptians learn about the human body? As mummies were prepared, Egyptians learned a lot about the human body. Egyptian doctors also studied diseases and created medicines to treat them. The Egyptians made progress in what they knew.

19.  Measuring time How did the Egyptians measure time? The Egyptians developed the first accurate (correct) calendar. This calendar was based on the cycles of the moon and had 360 days. Why did they change their calendar? The Egyptians changed their calendar because it was not accurate enough. They changed it according to the height of the Nile flood waters. They invented “Nilometers” and this calendar had 365 days. They even added 1 extra day every 4 years to make it accurate.

21.  Hieroglyphs What was the Egyptian’s writing system? The Egyptians used hieroglyphs. What does hieroglyph mean? Hieroglyph comes from the Greek words hieros (sacred) and glypho (inscriptions)
