Workplace Conflict Essential Questions: How does our childhood have an influence on workplace conflict? What steps can be taken to reduce workplace conflict? How do different conflict- management styles affect conflict resolution?

Conflict Occurs in all jobs and organizations Is inevitable because of various personality types and attitudes, problem- solving skills and goals of individual workers Is problem isn’t solved, mental and physical health problems can occur, productivity and morale is low, and the workplace is ‘poisoned’

Why does conflict occur? Psychologists believe early interactions from childhood and family influence our interactions in the workplace Stark believes that we have family baggage Baggage: –How our parents demonstrated authority –How we related to our siblings –General dynamics of primary family

Parental Authority Issues Stark believes in link between how our parents corrected us as children and self-esteem in adulthood. For example: “you are stupid” as a child, recorded in memory bank and if boss uses it, you overreact to criticism or correction

Sibling-Rivalry Issues Sibling rivalry as a child can affect interactions in the work place Includes: –What you/sibling did to get parental attention –Learned to share properly? –Blamed for problems sibling caused? –How was achievement handled amongst siblings? –Housework amongst each sibling?

General Dynamics Dynamics of the primary family influence our work relationships Growing up in a caring family, laid a foundation where workplace conflicts can be solved successfully The opposite is true Child with different set of rules can become confused/flustered as an adult Peacemaker

As an Adult Families that move can affect the functioning of a future worker...how so? Children don’t learn how to resolve conflicts Children that move frequently avoid making friends and this affects their understanding of social relationships As adults in the workforce, difficulty making commitment, rarely stay with job long enough to resolve conflict

Reducing Workplace Conflict What is Ambiguity? Overload? Why professionalize rather than personalize? Which three conflict-management styles apply best to you? Explain.
