A component-based approach to open educational resources in climate change education. Simon K. Haslett and Jonathan Wallen Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching University of Wales, Newport Email: Jonathan.Wallen@newport.ac.uk or celt@newport.ac.uk

Introduction Hope to make available two collections of PowerPoint presentations: –Global Environmental Change (2 nd year) –Quaternary Palaeoclimatology and Stratigraphy (3 rd year) A component-based approach. All of the content belongs to Simon. No 3 rd party material that needs to be cleared for copyright purposes. However, preparing the material for online access is time consuming (though no more than trying to get copyright clearance from publishers?).

A component-based approach To facilitate flexible use of the resources a component-based approach has been adopted. The component material is a mixture of images, videos and documents, which are being held on Flickr, YouTube and Slideshare. –Free and accessible –Considerable potential distribution Main repository – JorumOPEN. Using such an approach means the materials are not limited to the PowerPoint presentations in which they are found and can be used again in a different context. Any new digital media that is produced as learning resources will now be routinely uploaded to these online databases as a method of making learning resources accessible.

Flickr Over 2000 analogue slides and prints requiring repurposing for use in the resource. 1700 photographs and slides have been (thus far) digitized. 1/3 of these currently available on Flickr. Do not underestimate the time it takes to scan and digitize materials. Not yet fully annotated, with the possible intention of geo-tagging images.

YouTube 58 videos made available as open educational resources on YouTube. Covering topics as diverse as sea ice cover, coral reefs, rainforests and how to use a microscope.

Slideshare Can be used to host PowerPoints and any additional materials such as lecture notes, reading lists and student handouts. Another means of disseminating the resource. –Wider audience than Jorum(?) Content can be embedded and spread through social networks such as Facebook and twitter.

PowerPoints The individual components have then been combined to create two collections of PowerPoint presentations. E.g. http://open.jorum.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/2840 http://open.jorum.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/2840 All available from JorumOPEN.

Summary Component-based approach utilized to deliver PowerPoints. Allows for flexible use of the resources. Individual components available through popular web platforms Flickr, YouTube and Slideshare. Main resource accessible at JorumOPEN. Lack of 3 rd party material saved time in one respect, but digital reproduction of analogue material involves many hours!
