1 SDH FUNDAMENTALS By Dr Muhammad Khalil Shahid PTCL Training & Development

COURSE OBJECTIVES To provide participants with a thorough understanding of Synchronous Digital Hierarchy At the end of this course participants will be able to: Outline the SDH frame structure Understand the functions of Overhead Bytes and related Alarms Outline the link structure of SDH Network Analyze Multiplexing Structure Trace the VC-12 mapping in VC-4 Understand the Synchronization of SDH network

COURSE OUTLINE è SDH Basics è SDH Frame Structure è SDH Overheads è SDH Multiplexing/Mapping è SDH Synchronization and Protection

SDH è Synchronous Digital Hierarchy è SDH is a hierarchical set of digital transport structures, standardized for the transport of suitably adapted payloads over physical transmission networks è An integrated transmission network managed by a powerful network management system

SDH è A standard developed by ITU è It is documented in standard G.707 and its extension G.708 è Developed to replace the Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy (PDH) system è Allow interoperability between equipment from different vendors with Strong Network Management capabilities

SDH ITU Recommendations SDH refers to the rates and formats specified by ITU-T for synchronous data transmission over fiber optic networks. è ITU-T G.707: Network Node Interface for SDH è ITU-T G.781: Structure of Recommendations on Equipment for SDH è ITU-T G.783: Characteristics of SDH Equipment Functional Blocks è ITU-T G.803: Architecture of Transport Networks Based on SDH

PDH è Pre SDH Standard è 3 standards..European, Japanese, North America è European Standard in Pakistan è Complex Multiplexing structure è Weak monitoring

PDH Data Rates è PCM…… 64Kbps è E1……… 2.048 Mbps (30 x64 Kbps) è E2……… 8.448 Mbps è E3……… 34.368 Mbps è E4……… 139.264 Mbps è E5……… 565 Mbps
