Evidence of Evolution
2
Evolution The process by which life has changed over time. Macroevolution Microevolution
3
Evolution
4
What are species? Species literally means ‘kinds’. We recognize most species by their appearance.
5
Evolution Taxonomy( systematics) – branch of biology that names and classifies species Carl Linnaeus Will cover more in Unit 16 (1707–1778), a Swedish botanist, invented the modern system of binomial nomenclature.
6
Evolution Example Panthera pardus
7
Population All the members of a species living in a particular area new variations arise new variations arise these individuals tend to survive these individuals tend to survive This is where evolution This is where evolution occurs ( not indivual)
8
Adaptations Adaptations are special features that allow a plant or animal to live in a particular place or habitat. structures, physiology
9
Adaptations Explain why life is so diverse
10
Evolution While, evolution is an explanation for the unity of life. All organisms share the same characteristics of life because they can trace ancestry to the first cell or cells.
11
Evolution Example: Humans and monkeys share a common ancestor which separated into 2 separate lineages 40 million years ago New world South America migration Old world
12
Today’s Lab We will look at 2 types of data that supports the hypothesis of common ancestors: 1 ) the fossil record 2) comparative anatomy
13
Don’t forget….quiz next week over evolution
