Assign Roles: Team Captain (two): Will make sure everyone is on task and understands each section before moving forward. Also, make sure everyone is taking smart notes. “Leave No Man (or Woman) Behind”

Assign Roles: Materials Manager: Gathers all necessary materials for completion of lesson and keeps them organized when returning (white boards, practice sheets, etc).

Assign Roles: CFU Leader: Will make sure everyone completes “Whiteboard CFU” without looking at their notes. Make sure everyone in group shares their answers and works together in figuring out what mistakes were made.

Lesson Objectives Group will be able to… Effectively and efficiently take concise notes on the topic of place value and rounding. Properly be able to identify the value of specific digits in a number. Accurately round to a given place value.

Place Value Copy this chart in your notebook and MEMORIZE each place value!

Rounding Decimals BIG NOTE: “Five or more, raise the score. Four or less, let it rest” Example: Round 3.1416 to the nearest hundredths: Step 1: Find the hundredths place. Step 2: You must look at the number AFTER the hundredths place. Step 3: If the number is five or more, you must round up. If the number is four or less. You leave it the same.

So 3.1416 is rounded to 3.14

Rounding Decimals when Dividing In order to round the appropriate place value, you must divide until after the given place value in order to know whether you round up or down.

Example: Divide 109 by 7. Round to the nearest tenths place. (which means you need to divide two places after the decimal) Let’s practice…

Rounding with Whole Numbers When asked to round a number to the nearest tens, hundreds, etc, you would replace the removed digits with zero.

Example: Round 134.9 to the nearest tens place. =130... the next digit (4) is less than 5 so we remove the 4 and replace it with a zero
