1 Lesson 1 When mulitiplying or dividing by powers of ten (10, 100, 1,000, etc.), we can use a place value chart. **Please note that the symbol in the following parenthesis is being used for the division sign (/). Examples : 72.56 x 100 18.49 / 1,000

2

3 72.56 x 100 72.56 7256. Rewritten - 72.56 x 100 = 7,256 89.475 x 10 89.475 894.75 Rewritten - 89.475 x 10 = 894.75 ***Remember that the decimal does not hold a place value and a number can’t be put in its position

4 18.49 / 1,000 **the above symbol is being used for a division sign 18.49.1849 Rewritten with zeros inserted into appropriate places 18.49 / 1,000 = 0.01849 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 143.90 / 10 143.90 14.390 Rewritten 143.90 / 10 = 14.390 or 14.39 Since a zero at the end of decimal number has no value, we do not have to include it
