Our Objectives Describe and find the position of a square on a grid of squares. Recognise simple examples of horizontal and vertical lines. Recognise positions and directions, e.g. describe and find the position of a point on a grid of squares where the lines are numbered.

8 coordinates are always written in brackets, with a comma between each number 7 6 5 What is different? vertical 4 the number on the horizontal axis is always written first, then the number on the vertical axis 3 X Now look at this grid (3,2) 2 1 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 horizontal What is the position of this cross? (0,0) is called the origin

Draw an 8 x 8 grid on squared paper.
Group1 Draw an 8 x 8 grid on squared paper. Plot the following coordinates on the board: (0,5), (2,3), (4,1), (5,0). Join the points with a ruler. What word do we use to describe the line you’ve drawn? Groups 2 and 3 Use the 8 x 8 grid. Plot the following coordinates on the board: (0,5), (2,3), (4,1), (5,0). Join the points with a ruler. What word do we use to describe the line you’ve drawn?

Over to you... Group1 Groups 2 and 3
Draw an 8 x 8 grid on squared paper. Plot 3 corners of a square. Give your grid to a friend. Can they tell you the coordinate for the last corner of the square? Do more squares. Groups 2 and 3 Use the 8 x 8 grid. Plot 3 corners of a square. Give your grid to a friend. Can they tell you the coordinate for the last corner of the square? Do more squares.
