3 Introduction Research Topic: What are the effects of abusing drugs on teenagers? The reason for choosing this topic: Our group mates are interested in it as abusing drugs among teenagers is a serious problem in Hong Kong nowadays. Therefore, we choose this topic as our Research Topic.

4 1.What is drug abuses? Findings from Literature Review: - The findings are shown as follows: It means taking drugs that are not for medication. It means taking drugs more than the prescribed period of time. It means the indiscreet use of dangerous drugs for non-treatment purposes. Findings from Interview: - From the chart, we can see that: 86% of respondents thought drug abuse among teens is common in Hong Kong while 14% of them disagreed that drug abuse among teens is common in Hong Kong.

6 2. Why do teenagers abuse drugs? Findings from Literature Review: - The findings are shown as follows: It is because they want to bring excitements in their lives. They want to gain attention from their parents. It is because of the peer pressure. It is because they think drugs can help them think better and be more popular.

7 How serious is the lack of parental guidance of teens causing them to abuse drugs? How serious does emotional instability cause teens to abuse drugs? 80% of the respondents thought lack of parental guidance is a serious problem which causes teen to abuse drugs while the rest, 20%of them, thought it is not a serious problem. 78% of respondents thought emotional instability causing teens to abuse drugs is serious while the rest 22% of the respondents thought that the problem is not serious. Findings from Interview:

8 How serious is the lack of knowledge about the proper use of drugs cause teens to abuse drugs? How is the desire to gain attention from their parents of teens to abuse drugs? 78% respondents thought that lack of knowledge about the proper use of drugs causing teens to abuse drugs is serious. 22% of respondents thought that it is not serious. 61% of the respondents thought the desire to gain attention from their parents causing teens to abuse drugs is serious while the rest of the 39% respondents thought the problem is not serious.

9 3. What are the effects of abusing drugs on teenagers and their parents? Findings from Literature Review: - The findings are shown as follows:  It may cause different kinds of harmful side effects like heart disease.  It will increase the teenagers’ pulse rate.  It will lead to unconsciousness, respiratory failure and death.  It will make teenagers cannot concentrate on their studies.  Teenagers may need to pay large amount of money to buy drugs.  Teenagers may steal money from their parents or shops which against the law.

10 4. How to help the teens to prevent drug abuse? Findings from Literature Review: - The findings are shown as follows:  Teens can participate in some healthy activities  Teens can tell their teachers, parents and friends when they have difficulties  Parents should set strict rules for the teens  Parents should know more about their children’s friends and understand the personalities of the teenagers

11 What can the parents do to help their teens to prevent drugs abuse? Among the 91 options chosen by respondents, the option that parents can spend more time with teens to help them to prevent drugs constitutes about 30% while one-ninth of them think the parents can set strict rules for their children. About one-fourth of them think that parents can know more about the daily life of their children and know more about the peers of their children respectively. Findings from Interview:

12 What should the teens themselves do to avoid drug abuse? Among the 36 respondents, less than 6% of them thought that teens should have self- discipline to avoid drug abuse while one-third of them thought teens should be careful in choosing friends. One-sixth of them thought teens should talk to parents and teachers. About 10% of them thought that teens should develop good habits.

13  We had chosen ‘ Indulgence in popular culture ’ at first but we could not find enough relevant information.  We had arguments on choosing the questions of the questionnaire.  Sometimes each one of us stuck to our own view and did not accept the other groupmates ’ opinions.  We asked the advisors and they advised us to change to a new topic on which we that can find information more easily.  We voted for it and chose the questions which with the highest vote as the questions in questionnaire.  We tried to listen to everyone ’ s opinion and choose one that is the most suitable.

14  We have learnt how to cooperate with one an other in a group.  We have learnt how to divide the work equally in a group.  We have learnt how serious drugs are and we should careful when using drugs.  We have learnt how to make a good PowerPoint and a good oral presentation.
