Appeasement Britain and France practiced appeasement prior to the start of World War II. Britain & France allowed Germany to do what it wanted (appeasement). To appease is to please.

Appeasement = the policy of giving Hitler what he demanded to stop him from going to war

Appeasement 1936: Germany reoccupies the Rhineland > Britain condemns Germany. 1938: Germany takes over Austria > Britain allows it, but makes Germany promise not to take over anymore territory. 1939: Germany invades Czechoslovakia > Britain & France condemn Germany’s actions.

On June 16, 1940, the French cabinet voted to ask Germany for armistice terms. In order to completely humiliate the French, Hitler insisted on receiving their surrender inside the same railroad car in which the Germans had surrendered to the Allies at the end of World War I.
