Reminder: MED640: Critical Review of Research Papers Identify relevant scientific literature Acquire in-depth knowledge on the topic Present a scientific paper to your peers Critically evaluate and discuss scientific data Develop skills for writing your literature review Module dates: Wed 2 nd Nov 2011 (2-4 pm) Mon 7 th Nov 2011 9-5 pm (?) Tues 8 th Nov 2011 1-3.30 pm
3
Content Factual Information that can be referenced Should cover entire scope of your study Conflicting arguments should be equally weighted and discussed – it’s a review so be balanced! You may express an “evaluated opinion” on controversial data after full discussion of the literature Beware of journal envy (positive or negative)
4
Information Sources Your Supervisor Your colleagues (other PhD/MSc students!) Pubmed (NCBI)/Medline www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov Primary research papers Other reviews (be careful, maybe 2 or 3) Library e-journals Books – OK, but always out of date Websites – Be Very Careful! Best avoided
5
Structure Relevant to your research area Introduction –background sets the scene; why important? (How did this get funded?) Body – contains the detail - use sections to keep it clear (progressively more complex?) A picture is better than a thousand words – use your own Figures. Can rely on.jpg,.tiff,.pdf Finish with a conclusion/Summary to round it of – take home message should be strong Link your research into this if possible; ie pose a question, or make clear what isn’t known
6
Figures Actively encouraged – bare minimum of 3 Graphs – Pictures – Diagrams etc. *YOUR OWN* Colour is best, but be sensible! Don’t make text too small to read. Legends – describe what is in the figure –- exempt from the word count! If it is not yours – you must reference it! Try and construct a summary figure
7
Practicalities 1 4000 word limit – flexible (20-30 pages) Use 12 point font (e.g. Arial) Spacing at 1.5 lines Inset figures in a box that also contains the legend. Use insert command Include a Title page (Must include DDP number, supervisor, department, registration number)
8
Practicalities 2 Break into sections for each subject area – keeps a good structure Include a Contents page Include Abbreviations (looks good too) Use the headings tool in MS Word for this Get it bound together nicely Hand it in on time Get most of it done by Christmas
9
Practicalities 3: Contents Page 1: Protein Kinases 1 1.1: Ser/Thr kinases1 1.1.1: Non-membrane3 1.1.2: Transmembrane5 1.2: Tyrosine kinases7 1.2.1: Non-Membrane8 1.2.2: Transmembrane10 2: Protein phosphatases 12 2.1: Classification12 2.1.1: Catalytic mechanism16 2.1.1.1: Metal ions18
10
Practicalities 4: References References must be done using a reference manager. End note or end note Use Author date to help the marker validate your references easily Bibliography in Alphabetical order References are not included in the word count-so no excuses please
11
Submission Wed 11 th Jan 2012 @ 5.00pm Every day late you lose 5% of your final mark 2 Printed copies and 1 Electronic copy to Jodie Burnham (LU116)j.a.burnham@shef.ac.uk You must email your Endnote reference Library to Jodie so she can verify its usage

Submission 2 Your review will be checked for plagiarism before marking – Don’t copy!!!! If you do, it will be discovered and acted upon-so be prepared to defend yourself –Figures can be re-drawn and modernised (Cite as ‘After Bloggs et al., 2009) Your supervisor and another member of staff knowledgeable in the area will mark your work The pass mark is 65%
