2 Chemical Reactivity  Some elements are highly reactive while others arent  A chemical reaction: A transformation resulting in a change of composition, constitution and/or configuration of a compound ( referred to as the reactant or substrate )- http://www2.chemistry.msu.edu/faculty/reus ch/VirtTxtJml/react1.htm

3 Noble Gases Are The Least Reactive Elements  Group 18 in periodic table  They show almost no activity because there stable ! Meaning they have all of there electrons in there outer shell  These gases are helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, & radon

4 Alkali Metals & Halogens Are Most Reactive Elements  Because of the octet rule, an atom whose outer s & p orbital's do not match the electron configurations of a noble gas will react to lose or gain electrons so outer orbital's will be full

5 Words To Know !!!  Ion : an atom, radical, or molecule that has gained or lost one or more electrons an has a negative or positive charge  Cation : an ion that has a positive charge  Anion : an ion that has a negative charge

6 Did You Know ?  Many atoms form stable ions have noble-gas configurations !  Helium is an exception from the rule … it only has 2 !
