Tasks… Fill a cavity Provide care and treatment to individuals' teeth and mouth tissue. remove tooth decay, examine x-rays straighten teeth. offer advice and instruction on best practices for teeth preservation how best to floss and brush.

Competencies Examine patients Fill cavities Fill teeth and make other tooth repairs Restore, extract and replace diseased and decayed teeth Perform oral surgery, periodontal surgery and other treatments Clean teeth and instruct patients on oral hygiene Perform corrective work such as straightening teeth Treat diseased gum tissue Design bridgework, fit dentures and provide appliances to correct abnormal positioning of the teeth and jaws, or write fabrication instructions or prescriptions for use by denturists and dental technicians Supervise dental hygienists, dental assistants and other staff Most dentists work eight-hour days during the week, but in order to meet patient time constraints, some may also work weekends and evenings. After hours emergency care is sometimes required; depending on the dentist's specialty area. Dentists perform most of their work sitting down, often in uncomfortable positions. Dentistry may be a high stress occupation due to working with people who are in pain and are often afraid of them.
