6 major nutrients 1. Carbohydrates – starches and sugars that provide the body with most of its energy 2 types of carbohydrates - simple – fruits, milk, honey, table sugar - complex – (Starches) breads, pasta, rice, potatoes, corn Body breaks starch down and converts to sugar

6 major nutrients 2. Proteins – essential nutrients uses to repair body cells and tissues 2 types – Complete Incomplete –Complete – contain all 9 essential amino acids –Found in foods such as – milk, eggs, and fish – come from animals

6 major nutrients Incomplete proteins– Found in foods like dry beans (legumes)and grains –From plants –Do not contain all 9 essential amino acids

6 major nutrients 3. Vitamins – substances that help to regulate the body’s functions 2 types Water soluble – C, and many B vitamins –Dissolve in water, must be replaced every day Fat Soluble – Vitamins A,D,E,K - Body stores vitamins in fat until needed - Get from fruits and vegetables

6 major nutrients 4. Minerals – substances that strengthen the muscles, bones and teeth; enrich the blood; and keep the heart and their organs operating properly Calcium – Fluoride – Iron – Potassium, sodium, chloride

6 major nutrients 5. Fats – Sources of energy that also perform other functions, such as vitamin storage and body insulation Fat keeps skin healthy Food energy that is not used is stored as fat

6 major nutrients Water – is essential to survival Makes up to 75% of your total body weight Water helps break down food, carries nutrients throughout the body Removes wastes from the body and keeps the body at a comfortable temperature

Manage your weight through exercise Try to get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least 5 day a week

Eat Plenty of Grains, Vegetables and Fruits Foods in the 3 bottom of the pyramid provide energy as well as vitamins and minerals to be healthy FIBER – part of grains, fruits, and vegetables that the body cannot break down

Cut down on the fats 30% or less of your total calories should be fat

Avoid too much sugar
