2 Equation: a statement in which two expressions are equal Linear Equation- One variable equation that can be written as ax = b, and results in a line. Solution- a number, that when substituted for the variable, makes the equation a true statement. Equivalent: equations that have the same solutions.

4 Real World Example 1: A car salesman’s base salary is $21,000. She earns a 5% commission on sales. How much must she sell to earn $65,000 total? Total Income = 65,000 Base Salary = 21,000 Commission rate = 0.05 Total sales = x Example 2: You plan to enlarge, mat, and frame a 5 in. by 7 in. photo. The mat will be 1.5 in. wide on all sides. The perimeter of the framed photo will be 42 in. By what percentage should you enlarge the photo? Verbal Model Perimeter = 2  Width + 2  Length Perimeter = 42 in. Width = 3 + 5x Length = 3 + 7x
