American writer Hemingway as born in Oak, Illinois. He started his career as a writer in a newspaper office at the age of seventeen. During the 1920s, Hemingway became a member of the group Americans living in Paris, which he described in his first important work, The Sun Also Rises. Equally successful as A Farewell To Arms, the study of an American ambulance officer’s disillusionment in the war and his role as a deserter.

Hemingway used his experience as a reporter during the Civil War in Spain as the background for his most ambitious novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls. Among his later works, the most outstanding is the short novel The Old Man and the Sea, the story of an old fisherman’s journey, his long and lonely struggle with a fish and the sea, and his victory in defeat. Now Hemingway is the classic symbol of bravery, or strong man.

Choosing a Job Profitable or a Job I Love How can one find a desirable job? This question puzzles nearly everyone. In practice, most people look for well-paid jobs while a few search for jobs they love. Most people consider the amount of pay as an important or even the only factor when looking for jobs. They do so partly because that they are only aware of ho important and powerful they are with money in short time. With money, they may improve their living conditions and enjoy lives their lives better. Besides, they think that the more they earn,

the more valuable they are and the more respect they will get from others. They don’t care hether the jobs are relevant to what they have learned at school as long as they are wellpaid. Nor do they consider how much delight the jobs can give them. In fact, they will choose any job as long as this job brings them the greatest profits. A few people go to another extreme. They do whatever they love. Their ideal jobs must be in accordance with the fulfillment of their dreams. For them, jobs are not means of earning their livings, but ways of self-fulfillment. They hope to put their wisdom and ability to use and turn their dreams into reality. Or else, they won’t take those jobs which they don’t love at all.

If it is for me to make the choice, I won’t follow either extreme. Instead, I will choose a job fit for me, that is, a job for which my learning has qualified me well. Thus, I will take it confidently and expect an early success in it.

Dear Mary, April 7 It has been a long time since we met last time. I miss you very much. I learn that you will have a week off for May Day holiday. Why not come to visit me in Beijing? We can enjoy the beautiful scenes together. You know, Beijing is a city of great historical significance and there is a long list of places waiting for you to visit. Among them I strongly recommend the Summer Palace and the Fobidden City. Both of them are considered as the best-preserved imperial places in the world. I believe you will have a great time there. I’m looking forward to your reply. Best wishes, Rebecca
