10 Accreditation Process -Churchill Downs -Difficult Inspection because track was not open for live racing, so many of the procedures that are key to the process (e.g. pre-race inspection) were difficult or impossible to see in person. As a result, we needed to have written protocols signed off by state veterinarian. -Churchill corporate commitment to safety is apparent -Exceeded standards in many ways: Padded Starting Gate, Post Race exam protocols, Second Kimzey Ambulance

11 Accreditation Process -Keeneland -Not afraid to spend money in areas concerning safety -Polytrack -Exceeded standards in many ways: Twice daily track maintenance measurement; Padded Starting Gate; Use of InCompass Hand-held module for pre-race inspections, allowing sharing of data among regulatory veterinarians in other jurisdictions; Jockey Medical Records

12 Accreditation Process -Delaware Park -Exceeded standards in many ways: Pre-race inspection protocols and data gathering; Post- race observation; Use of New Riding Crop; Safety Committee -Current Issues with Toe Grabs in Delaware

13 Accreditation Process -Pimlico – Received Provisional Accreditation -Mainly, procedures are not written -Maryland not conducting Post-Mortem exams -MJC not using new crops -MJC does not do much training/Continuing Ed. -Maryland inconsistent with model medication rules and penalties -Maryland conducting Post-Race TCO2 testing -Maryland not conducting Out-of-Competition testing -Maryland not participating in Frozen Sample Study -No Security Assessment

14 Accreditation Process -Belmont Park -Exceeding standards in following areas: Pre-Race Examinations; TCO2 Testing; Equine Ambulance support; Jockey Health Support; Detention Barn for Security

15 Accreditation Process -Hollywood Park -Exceeding standards in following areas: Post- Mortem Examinations; Equine Ambulance (Sprinklers); Research (Blea/McIlwraith Study on morning injuries); TCO2 Testing; Steroid Testing; Out-of-Competition Testing; Frozen Sample Collection

16 Accreditation Process -Calder -Still has outstanding items to be addressed – part of the problem is the lack of a true racing commission

17 Take-Aways -Process is working -Three out of Seven tracks created relationships with aftercare facilities as a result of this process -Delaware Lasix -Maryland Medication -Aftercare is a big issue with tracks -Many believe it is not their problem, which we found out when drafting the Code of Standards -Security Assessment well received -Tracks are learning how to improve backstretch security
