Conference & Travel Grants Useful way to secure funds at an early stage of your career. Provide familiarisation with the application process. Demonstrate ability to deliver promises of application.

Conference & Travel Grants British Academy – Overseas Conference Grants Grants are available for the travel expenses of a scholar in the humanities or social sciences delivering a paper at a conference abroad. Royal Society – Conference Grants Support UK based scientists wishing to either present their own paper/poster or chair a session at an overseas conference. British Academy – British Conference Grants Provide a contribution towards the expenses of bringing key speakers from within the UK or from overseas to conferences held in the UK. Royal Society – Short Visits to & from the UK To initiate one-to-one collaborations and explore opportunities to build lasting networks between UK academics and overseas counterparts.

Small Grant Schemes Support for smaller projects suitable for first time researchers. Peer review process is often less intense. Demonstrate the PI can successfully manage a project.

Small Grant Schemes ESRC – Small Grants Scheme Supports Blue Skies research in the social sciences, particularly useful for new researchers making their first application to ESRC. The British Academy – Small Grants Scheme Grants are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences, to support the direct costs of research. The Nuffield Foundation – Social Science Small Grants Scheme Aimed at projects that develop social science research capacity particularly by supporting the work of those new to social science research. The Royal Society – Project Grants Provides funding for research scientists at an early stage of their career or established scientists wishing to change the direction of their research.

New Investigator Schemes Aim to encourage the development of new researchers. Peer reviewed accounting for relative inexperience. Avoid competing with more established researchers.

New Investigator Schemes AHRC - Research Grant for Early Career Researchers To assist researchers at the start of their careers in gaining experience of managing and leading research projects. ESRC - First Grants Scheme Aimed at assisting new researchers gain experience of managing and leading a research project. NERC - New Investigator Competition Annual competition aimed at Investigators at the start of their scientific career. Leverhulme Trust – Early Career Fellowships Career development opportunities for proven researchers who do not hold a full time academic position.
