2 Defining Operations Operations are the ‘direct tasks’ that cover the actual processes need to make your product or deliver your service The term operations is usually associated with manufacturing something, but it is just as important to deliver a service efficiently

3 What about Quality? How will you know that your products are of a high enough quality? Should you sample rather than test each item? Should people creating products check the quality of their own work? How can customers be sure of quality?

4 Planning your Operations Production planning is a real skill – making sure you deliver on time, to budget, to the stated quality In a service industry – it could be the preparation time involved In manufacturing – setting up a run etc Make sure you have the right staff and resources in the right place at the right time

5 Laws and Regulations Employing people Insurances Licences and planning permission Business law and contracts Data protection and e-commerce Tax issues Intellectual property

6 Health & Safety Regulations Employers have a duty under the law to ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of employees when at work Employers must consult with employees, or with their safety representatives, on matters that relate to health, safety, and safety at work
