Work Safety Representative within the Canberra Reinforcing Plant ‘onesteel’

To be a Work Safety Representative you must first hold a minimum of a certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety Part 4 of the Work Safety Regulation, Division 4.3, Section 40 or 41, ‘Work safety representative – approved training’ To be compliant with current OH&S Acts an Regulations Part 4 of the Work Safety Act, Division 4.2 Section 58, ‘Work safety representatives – functions Part 4 of the Work Safety Regulations Division 4.2, Section 31, ‘Work safety representatives – general’

Other responsibilities that WSR’s need to comply with to satisfy employer obligations at ‘onesteel’ consist of Code of behaviour Critical Elements from the codes of practice of onesteel A knowledge of Manual Handling A Knowledge of Musculoskeletal Disorders A Knowledge of Noise Control A knowledge of Emergency, Evacuation and First Aid procedures

At the ‘onesteel’ branch in Canberra the level of the WSR is as follows 1. Branch Manager 2. Supervisor 3. Lead Hand 4. Scheduler 5. Accounts/ Secretary 6. Work Safety Representative 7. Marketing and Sakes Representatives 8.Plant Operators

The WSR is permitted to enter a premises if they believe a contravention of the Act has happened or is likely to happen Part 4 of the Work Safety Act, Division 4.4, Section 63 ‘Authorised representative – entry to workplace’ Part 4 of the Work Safety Act, Division 4.4, Section 64 ‘Authorised representative – notice of entry’ The WSR’s enforcement powers can be found under the following Part 4 of the Work Safety Act, Division 4.4, Section 66 ‘Authorised representative – powers available on entry’

A WSR may issue a provisional notice if they believe that a responsible person or practice is contravening the Act Part 4 of the Work Safety Regulation, Division 4.5, Section 45, ‘Provisional improvement notice – issue of notice’ Part 4 of the Work Safety Regulation, Division 4.5, Section 46, ‘Provisional improvement notice – content of notice’ A WSR must revoke the provisional notice once they have ensured that the notice was complied with Part 4 of the Work Safety Regulation, Division 4.5, Section 51, ‘Provisional improvement notice - revocation of notice’
