14 Objectives Gain a General Understanding of How Adults Learn Review Successful Methods of Engaging Adult Learners Build an Understanding of the Qualities Needed in Affective Adult Learning Facilitators

15 Role Player #1: Spoon Feeding Trainer (You have been selected to role play a “bad” trainer. Have fun with this role. You are asked to “read” the following material as if you were instructing a kindergarden class. You are sweet, but think your learners need every instruction spoon fed to them) “Now class, I need you to pay close attention to what we’re going to be learning now. I want you to take out a sheet of white notebook paper and write down exactly what I tell you to do. Now does everyone have their pencil and paper ready...you better use a pencil in case you make a mistake. Now begin taking down what I say. ‘Lions Clubs are headed by a club president.’ That is president, spelled p-r-e-s-i-d-e-n-t. Now did everyone get that down? Good, now write this down: ‘Most Lions Clubs have at least two Vice Presidents, a Secretary and a Treasurer.’ I know that was a lot, so let me repeat that: ‘Most Lions Clubs have at least two Vice Presidents, a Secretary and a Treasurer.’

16 Role Player #2: The “I will grace you with my knowledge” Trainer (You have been selected to role play a “bad” trainer. Have fun with this role. You are asked to “read” the following material as if you were a great expert imparting knowledge to lower life forms. You know everything, but have little respect for the folks you are training.) Ok, listen up. As you know, I was the best District Governor that our District has ever seen. So I have a few minutes to tell you how you can try to be like me. You better listen, because I believe that some of you have never understood anything about Lionism, and I know it all. You see, when I was District Governor, I gave the best speech at every club I visited, and let me tell you, those clubs were glad I came. Most of them were so glad I came, they bought my meal that evening. Bet most of the other PDGs around here can’t say that. To show you how good I was, one club even asked me back to do their officer’s installation this year--- even though it has been 15 years since I was governor. Let me tell you, I did a bang-up job of installing their officers in just 48 minutes. I can assure you those officers were well installed when I was through.

17 Role Player #3: The I am not worthy Trainer (You have been selected to role play a “bad” trainer. Have fun with this role. You are asked to “read” the following material as if you were a very insecure person. You should be shy, and well aware that you have never done anything like this before.) Our GLT Coordinator has asked me to lead this session on Community Service Projects. I don’t know why she asked me, and I really don’t know why we need to discuss this topic: we all know that giving money to our State Foundation takes care of doing what we should do as a Lions Club. You probably know that, so I am so sorry about telling you stuff that you already know. Our club has really lost members lately, but we still raised $275 for the State Foundation last year. I really should have prepared something about that to share with you today. I really wish I had told the GLT Coordinator to get someone else to do this session. I am sure that Carl Harrell could have done a much better job than me. He is always so polished and well spoken. He would really have done much better than me on this topic. I just worried all night last night about this session. I hardly got any sleep.
