doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0xxx-00-004K Submission March 1, 2010 Huawei Slide 2 Smart Agriculture: Emergent WSN markets Huge Population, Motorization and Bad Weathers Challenge Chinese Agricultures High-efficient, Smart operation is only choice for Chinese Agriculture. Millions Green Houses Supports current Agricultures in all northern China. Large-Scale farmland monitoring are expended nationally. The national smart agriculture market for WSN tech and products is > 10B RMB 。

doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0xxx-00-004K Submission March 1, 2010 Huawei Slide 3 Two WSN Application Example in Smart Agriculture Large-Scale WSN for wide farmland information monitoring - The collected data is for farm agricultural condition analysis, making cultivation schemes and so on. WSN for in Smart Greenhouse environmental control system - An economic WSN organizes sensors and controllers easily for greenhouse autonomy and product heavy Battery Power supporting is mandatory. Expect Battery operation lasts over 2 yr, even longer.

doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0xxx-00-004K Submission March 1, 2010 Huawei Slide 4 Detail Example – ELC-WSN in Irrigated Agriculture Extra Low Consumption Wireless Sensor Network (ELC-WSN) nodes are deployed in farmland and collect the soil moisture periodically. The soil moisture data is transmitted to flow rate controller of water pump. The pump optimizes the irrigation schedule so as to increased crop water productivity and improved yield quality. For there is no power in crop field and sensor nodes require as small as enough not to influence the farming work of tractor and monitoring time is usually very long, at least one year, sensor nodes must have very low energy consumption. ELC-WSN Sensor node flow rate controller of water pump This is also the answer why extra power consumption is so critical on the application.

doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0xxx-00-004K Submission March 1, 2010 Huawei Slide 5 Expected on tech requirements for ELC-WSN Energy consumption - all the WSN devices in smart agriculture should be powered by battery and the consumption current is better at several µAs. Transmission distance - one hop distance may be ~ 100m and with good diffraction performance in different environment Networking - networking must be easy to re-deploy by self due to the fast- changing environment and less tech supporting. - networking size should be scalable and cover KM 2 area.

doc.: IEEE 802.15-11-0xxx-00-004K Submission March 1, 2010 Huawei Slide 6 IEEE802.15.4 is one Possible Smart Application Data rate - text and small pictures (< 300kb per picture) transmitted within one minute as the user passing the coverage of information node. Transmission distance - one hop distance ~ 100m Energy consumption - The applications have to share the battery power with calls, Network - The network must be easy to re-deploy due to the fast-changing layout of the public areas. 802.15.4 Low data rate (20 to 250 kb/s) Short distances (10 to 100m) Multi-year battery life Little or no infrastructure
