How is the growing population affecting Indonesia’s food supply? How is the food supply affecting the climate?
7
Indonesia’s food security situation has improved as well as a decrease in malnutrition. However, with the population increasing there is higher strain on food supply as well as water. There will continue to be a strain with the population continuing to grow. 21 million people (9%) of population are still undernourished because of the demand of food, in larger sections of the country, is being unmet. Rise of population means the country will become wealthier and with that comes even more pressure of food and water supply as demands will go up. A little under half of the population has access to safe water due to the high demand and large population. If poverty (10-15% of country) continues than even more people will be unable to pay for food, as the wealthier citizens will be requiring more of the demand in Indonesia; adding to the pressure on the supply.
8
35-40% of fruits and vegetables are spoiled before they are reaching the market. Possibly caused by unfertile soil from the drought. Food supply is being affected by demographic transition since Indonesia is undergoing urbanization. Causing land necessary for agricultural growth to be transformed into buildings. In order to be built they have construction vehicles that give off gas into the atmosphere. With an increase in food demand, and pressure on the supply, Indonesia will need to flatten land to form cropping areas in place of the ones destroyed for buildings. Crops are unable to grow with the unstable environment adding to the pressure that comes with demand
9
How is the growing population affecting the economy? How is the economy affecting the climate?
10
In 2012 Indonesia had emerging-market investors but only a year later have the growth is slowing and inflation heads up. This is possibly due to the fact that the population is growing and thinks are more in demand. The second quarter GDP growth slowed to 5.8% when the government was targeting 6.3%. Indonesia unfortunately has a very fragile economy. The larger the population the more difficult it is to sustain a steady and stable economy. This is the case for Indonesia as there is many things in the economy to focus on. The economy is heavily influenced by location or geography of a country.
11
The better the climate is in a country to start off, the more likely it is to change which is influential on its economy. Indonesia’s economy is fragile and this is partially because of the constant climate that Indonesia has. Since Indonesia has a constant climate they have little exports so they rely on few things for their economy (business freedom). These little options lead Indonesia to constantly take from their main and only providers. This explains why deforestation is such a big thing in Indonesia. The economy even puts more stress on food supply and animal extinction since it has to take from both in order to provide an economy a larger country like Indonesia needs.
12
How is the growing population affecting animal extinction? How is animal extinction affecting the climate?
13
Lots of animals in Indonesia are becoming endangered because of the increase of population, logging and palm plantations Animals are becoming endangered, as their homes are being destroyed. These trees are being cut down to make space for homes and buildings used by humans, causing the loss of an animal friendly environment that animals require. Do to deforestation, Indonesia has lost 26% of its primary forest, home to many different animals. Some animals that are being affected by this destruction of their homes are: the tiger and Sumatra Flying Squirrel which is only hound in Sumatra, Indonesia.
14
If Indonesia continues to cut down trees, animals native only to Indonesia will more than likely go extinct. Indonesia is also one of the countries with the most deforestation. If animals, such as the tiger, go extinct than the prey of the tiger will increase and grow out of control. The vegetation will then begin to die, as it is the lower part of the food chain, since the ecosystem will be out of proportion. With deforestation, the loss of trees comes the loss of carbon dioxide. There is a decrease in carbon dioxide from all the trees being cut down, therefore it is adding to global warming as carbon dioxide is necessary for life. Also, an out of proportion ecosystem adds to even more extinction of other animals, as the prey of the tiger will soon have to feed on other animals. Thus, creating a cycle.
15
Suggestions to assist Food Supply, Economy and Animal Extinction and their affect on the climate
16
A suggestion would be to lower the consumption of food, especially the wealthier people, and allow time for crops to be grown to meet the demand. This means reducing the destruction of agricultural sites for construction. To improve the economy of Indonesia, instead of focusing just on business freedom also promote the rule of law and other aspects that help the economy. Then money can be spent to improve building materials and reduce urbanization in natural areas. This will then allow opportunity for more trade with more products. One way that Indonesia can improve in order to prevent any animal extinction is to provide a tree for every one that is cut down. Then, we can sustain a subtle home for the animals as long as we give back what we take.
