2008-092009-10 Production – 3821 tonnesProduction – 5115 tonnes Value to economy - $55.8 millionValue to economy - $74.3 million No of producing farms - 22No of producing farms - 23 Employs – 319 FTE’sEmploys – 330 FTE’s R & D priorities (to be verified by R & D committee) R & D priorities (to be ratified by the R & D committee) Stats from annual DEEDI Report to farmers. Stats from annual DEEDI Report to farmers

 Yasi took its toll on farms in the Cardwell area  2 major farms have restructured, resulting in staff losses and reduced production capacity for the industry  Predicted production for 2011-12 could be around 3000 tonnes  Some farms have capitalised on opportunities and expanded their operations  Guthalungra – 13 years and counting still no sod of soil dug to date.....

 Develop technologies that increase gross return by 10%  OBJECTIVES  Increase on farm returns  Decrease production costs  Environmental footprint maintain 0% increase per annum per hectare (no increased effect from increasing production)

 Increasing Price per kilogram – number one and will always be number one  Increasing growth – grams per week  Better survival percentages  How quickly you can get your crop to harvest – standing crop capacity  Increasing the yield per hectare  Cost of feed  Power rated 10 th however looming carbon economic impacts could see this rating much higher very quickly.

 Feasibility study for commercialisation of blue carbon through algae sequestration  Collaborative efforts to break through restrictive policy barriers  Understanding aquatic micro algae & their impacts on aquaculture production  Feasibility of challenging SEWPAC/DERM “Nil net discharge” policy for aquaculture  Non reliance on imported raw materials – everything under the seafood banner (food miles, carbon footprint)

 Post Yasi – funded for an IRO  Post Yasi – funded DEEDI Rural Resilience to undertake seasonal forecasting to improve resilience of prawn farms to future climate events. A. Hobday CSIRO  DAFF - energy audit for farms completed  Caring for Country – 2012-13 program – Prawn farming stewardship action plan

 Viability  Red (green tape)  Marketing/Industry development levy  National Food Security  Sustainability  Skills & Training
