2 Mission “To encourage the creation of trails and greenway corridors, parks, and preserves in order to enhance and conserve the quality of life for the citizens and wildlife of Oldham County” Greenways for Oldham County, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization

3 Background  Organized in 1998  Worked in partnership with Oldham County government to provide bike and pedestrian trails and safe and improved accesses  Have worked to secure funding and approval of the Interurban Greenway to connect LaGrange and Pewee Valley

4 Why Trails for Oldham County?   Keep green spaces GREEN   Promote healthy living   Give kids and adults a place for safe, inexpensive activity   Promote small town businesses   Connect the community   Increase the property values of existing land

5 Major Benefits of Oldham County Greenways   Health   Small business growth   Connectivity to the community (schools, businesses, parks)   Decrease our dependence on our automobiles   Increase accessibility to Oldham County’s beauty

6 Obesity in Kentucky   6th in the US in adult obesity (25.3%)   4th in US when you combine obese and overweight adults (63%)   3rd in US in childhood/adult obesity   15% of high school students are overweight   49th in overall physical activity   Type II diabetes doubled since 1990   Obesity doubled since 1990   1/3 of children watch greater than 3 hours of TV daily   20% of children under 5 are overweight

7 Trails in Oldham County: When Did it All Begin ? The movement for trails in Oldham County began when citizens began showing more concern for the lack of connectivity among Oldham’s many communities and opportunities for multi-modal transportation. Citizens, along with Planning and Zoning Staff, and elected officials, joined forces to develop a group that would spawn other similar groups in the arena of Greenways and Trails in Oldham County. 1997: Greenways for Oldham County Held its First Meeting 2000: Interurban Greenway Kick-Off Walk Held 2003: Greenways Interurban Master Plan was Adopted by Oldham County Fiscal Court; historic L&N Train Depot renovation completed; Train Depot to serve as the Interurban Greenway Trail Head 2006: Kodak Greenways Grant for new website, materials. Worked with county on Commerce Parkway trail grant approval. Hosted Open Forum. 2007: Continued efforts on Commerce Parkway planning, new county Bike, Pedestrian and Greenways Master Plan initiated; hosted Summit 2008: Wendell Moore Park Phase 1 trails constructed; Phase 1 of Commerce Parkway multi-use trails construction started in September

8 Interurban Greenway  Early vision for Greenways for Oldham County to connect LaGrange and Pewee Valley  Planned trail length of 13 miles  2000: Federal Grant  Purchased and renovated the old Louisville and Nashville Train Depot in LaGrange—to serve as the trail head for the Interurban Greenway  Commenced Phase 1 of master plan for construction, beginning in LaGrange to include Kentucky Ave. sidewalk extension and downtown LaGrange Main Street sidewalk improvements  2007 – 2008: Oldham County government Federal Grant for Commerce Parkway, Phase 1 received. Construction began in September 2008

9 Commerce Parkway  East-West thoroughfare linking LaGrange and Buckner  Shared-use path that will connect to KY-393 planned shared-use path to Wendell Moore Park and Senior Center  Planned connectivity to Eden Park--a planned 1,000 acre mixed-use community south of I-71  Construction of Phase 1, a 1.2-mile segment began in September 2008 and will be complete in early 2009  Phase 2 (2 mile segment) is programmed to start in early 2009 Photos from October and November 2008

11 Oldham County Bike, Pedestrian, and Greenways Master Plan, March 2008  KIPDA Grant  Started September 2007 and approved by the Oldham County Planning Commission in March 2008  County-wide connectivity opportunities documented  Potential linkages to Metro Louisville trail loop (N.E. Corridor) and Century 21 Floyds Creek trails  Includes implementation plan, trail standards, estimated costs, and strategies

13 Wendell Moore Park Recreational Trails  Greenways for Oldham County and Oldham County government joint project  Greenways provided funding; county government provided equipment and labor  Assisted by local businesses and professional firms  Groundbreaking held July 2008  Southern trail loops in place by September 2008

14 Wendell Moore Park  107 Acres  Located in the geographic center of Oldham County within 15-20 minutes of 90 percent of the population  Most heavily used park in the county system  Site of John W. Black Community Center and Aquatic Center  Senior Center located in the northern part of the park; 2008 expansion complete  Softball and baseball field and playground located with proposed trail loop  Located near the Oldham County school campus; Oldham County Country Club; Cooperative Extension Agency; Oldham County Police Department, and Oldham county Dispatch  Provides multiple connectivity opportunities to the Interurban backbone  Provides a logical safe trails destination 3.5 miles of trails proposed

15 Phase 1 and 2 Accomplishments  Phase 1, Southern Loop trails broke ground in July 2008 and are essentially complete  Phase 2 to commence in 2009; will connect to Norton Healthcare Trails at the Aquatic Center Phase 2

16 Oldham County Senior Center Loop  Additions to Senior Center completed 2008  Norton Healthcare has pledged financial support to allow trail construction in 2009  Trail will connect to Aquatic Center amd internal park connection trail to newly completed southern loops

17 Project Scope  Construct Norton Healthcare Senior Center Loop trail: 8’ wide,.8 mile long, with 6” crushed stone surface. Will rehabilitate an existing trail route and construct new sections in and around the Oldham County Senior Center  Construct a.4 mile 6’ wide connecting trail to the Oldham County Aquatic Center parking lot area  Provide trail amenities, to include benches, waste receptacles, and signage recognizing North Healthcare sponsorship  This trail section will connect to the newly complete “Southern Loop” trail section, and its connecting trail resulting in nearly 3.5 miles of new recreational trails within Wendell Moore Park  Provides a safe venue to promote wellness to a wide target audience of Oldham County citizens

18 2009 Focus  Completion of on-going projects: Commerce Parkway and Wendell Moore Park  Safe Routes to School trail planning and construction  Expanded membership and participation  Collaboration with Metro Parks and Century 21 for future connectivity
