Where to place those modifiers?

Hmmmmmm Place modifying words, phrases, and clauses as close as possible to the words they modify.

The placement of the modifier affects the meaning of the sentence. A misplaced modifier is a word or word group whose placement suggests that it modifies one word or phrase when it is intended to modify another. Ex: Ringing, everyone glared at the man with the cell phone.

A dangling modifier is a modifier that does not clearly modify another word in a sentence. Ex: Before moving to Philadelphia, Mexico City was their home.

Prepositional phrases!!! Can you remember the two kinds of prepositional phrases? What is the job of an adjective? What is the job of an adverb? Remember prepositional phrases are modifiers and they must be placed close to the words they modify. When the prepositional phrase is an adjective phrase, it should be placed directly after the word it modifies. Ex: The hat belongs to that girl with the feathers.

When the prepositional phrase is an adverb phrase, it should be placed near the word it modifies. When prepositional phrases act a adverbs, it can be placed before or after the word it modifies. Ex: She read that a new restaurant had opened in today’s newspaper.

REMEMBER?????? Place the prepositional phrase near the one word it modifies.

Joshua and Reginald heard that there was a destructive hailstorm on the news. The poster caught my eye on the wall. In the tiny bird’s nest we thought there might be eggs. Our teacher said on Monday the class would put on a play.
