3 The Dangling Modifier A dangling modifier is a sentence in which it is unclear what is being described (or modified). Example: Hoping to excuse my lateness, the note was written and given to the teacher. Correction: Hoping to excuse my lateness, I wrote a note to the teacher.

4 The Misplaced Modifier A misplaced modifier is a sentence in which the modifier is in the wrong place. Example: On the way home, Janice found a gold man’s watch. Correction: On the way home, Janice found a man’s gold watch.

5 Avoiding Dangling or Misplaced Modifiers Saves Lives Read the examples below: – I gave food to my kitten and chopped it up. – I gave an olive to my friend that was stabbed with a fork. – Mrs. Jones was proud of her first hunting trip, she was able to shoot many animals as well as her husband.
