2. Objectives The objectives of the course are to: 1.Improve your English language skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing so that you can deal more effectively with your academic studies and future vocational requirements 2.Improve your skills dealing with aspects of academic English 3.Increase your confidence and interest in English 4.Develop your ability to learn and improve the language on your own.

3. Course Content The development of English language skills in this course will be based on topics such as learning English, hobbies, cities, ambitions, and short stories. Communicative activities will be used in class in order to develop your fluency & accuracy and increase your confidence when you use English.

Details of language to be covered 1.Speaking: developing fluency and accuracy 2.Listening: listening for main ideas, details & specific information 3.Reading: reading for main ideas & specific information, understanding text organisation & inferring. 4.Writing: writing paragraphs, a short academic essay 5.Grammar: tenses, question forms 6.Vocabulary: places, life events

7. Attendance and Punctuality Failure to attend lessons may result in your failing the course. A minimum of 80% attendance is required unless leave of absence is obtained from your teacher. This leave will be granted only in exceptional circumstances or illness, in which case you must present a medical doctor’s certificate. You are expected to be punctual in attending all your classes. Habitual lateness in coming to class or coming long after the starting time may result in your being marked absent.

9. Plagiarism Plagiarism is the use of other written or Internet sources without permission or acknowledgement of the author or source. This includes copying, semi-copying, re- working, or re-phrasing with acknowledgement of the author or source. If plagiarism is demonstrated, the student concerned may receive a zero mark on that assignment.

10. Assessment Policy Submission of assignments after the due date will be subject to a penalty of mark deduction of 5% of the total mark per day. Any student who fails to be present at an in- class assessment with a valid reason will be given one further opportunity for assessment, provided there is sufficient documentary evidence justifying his/her absence and it is administratively possible. If a student is absent from an in-class assessment with reasonable justification, “0” will be awarded. It is the student’s duty to request an additional assessment from his/her class teacher.
