4 When did it start? Editing wasn’t always common place Most films were shot in one take, with a stationary camera. No story - typically just events A Russian Example...

12 Early editing In 1918 Russian director Lev Kuleshov did an experiment to test the psychology of image association.

13 Early editing Despite the fact that the image was the same, people thought he was acting different emotions based on the image that followed.

14 Early editing Edwin Stanton Porter is credited for having the first film with plot, action, and different shots. Historic short film “The Great Train Robbery” (1903)

16 Image Relation Editing is all about creating a relation from one image to the next. When images are shown in rapid succession in the same context,we refer to it as a montage. Does anybody know any examples of a montage?

17 The Montage The creating of the montage is credited to Russian Director Sergei Eisenstein. One of his most prolific and significant contributions to editing was showcased in his work Battleship Potemkin (1925). The Odessa Steps

18 Things to look for How does music play a part in a montage sequence? Is there a rhythm to the edits? How does the concept of time play out?

20 How they did it Through use of sets, location, and multiple takes, they were able to splice together the best of the best to make a final product. The process of splicing(or cutting) together physical pieces of film is referred to as linear editing.

21 Modern Editing Modern Editing is referred to as Non-Linear Editing Non-Linear Editing- The use of a computer system and software to perform non-destructive editing on source footage.

23 So why use film Aesthetic/Artistic choice Globally acceptable format Longer shelf-life (both film stock and equipment) Magic

24 In Class assignment Find a piece of video work online (youtube, etc) that you feel exemplifies good editing. It could be a music video, part of a TV show, interview, documentary, whatever! Write a paragraph or two describing why you feel this has good editing. Turn in at the end of class. We will share at the end of class. Turned in assignment will count as a graded assignment.
