FAFSA --- ***IMPORTANT Definition: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is a form that can be prepared annually by current and prospective college students in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid. https://fafsa.ed.gov Federal deadline - June 30, 2015 State deadline (MO resident) – April 1, 2014 by midnight, Central Time. College Deadline Check with the college(s) you are interested in attending. You may also want to ask your college about its definition of an application deadline - whether it is the date the college receives your FAFSA, or the date your FAFSA is processed. ***Must have Federal taxes done before April 15*** ***Must have Missouri state taxes done before

Grants vs Scholarships Grants and scholarships are free money that doesn’t have to be repaid Grants are often need-based Scholarships are usually merit- based. Can come from a variety of places – Federal Government – State Government – College or Career school – A private or nonprofit organization Grants may have to be repaid if student withdraws from school before finishing a semester.

Grants Federal Grants – Usually awarded only to undergraduate students. – The amount of aid received depends on financial need, the cost of attendance at the school, full-time or part-time student, and more – Max amount for 2014-2015 is $5,730 Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant s – A grant for undergraduate students with exceptional financial need – Given to students by the financial aid office at each participating schools – Campus-based aid so not all schools participate – Can receive between $100 and $4,000 a year

Grants Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grants – May qualify if a parent or guardian died as a result of military service in Iraq or Afghanistan – Were not eligible for a Federal Pell Grant based income – Max same as Pell Grant $5,730. Graduation Preparation for High School Students To-Do List Fall 2014/Spring 15 for Juniors and Seniors September/October 2014 Think about where you want to go to school Do your own research on the institution you choose. Write down questions. Keep your grades up! Colleges look at your last year of high school. Schedule tours. Set up an appointment with your academic counselor if your GPA is low. Look for ACT dates. Start looking and applying for scholarships! Must scholarships are due in late January, February, and early Write down deadlines! November 2014 Network!! Get involved!. Write down your involvement you can put it on a resume. Create a resume. Write down organizations in school and in the community your involved in, write down certifications you earn, write down where you work, Find someone to shadow in your field of interest. Choose volunteer opportunities in that field to see what your career includes. December 2014 Work on filling out scholarships in your spare time. Take the ACT offered! Start filling out college applications.

Watch in the mail for acceptance letters from colleges you applied to Take the ACT offered Take a campus tour of the college-meet with academic advisor who will discuss what you may be interested in April 2015 Watch for financial aid rewards to mailed or electronically sent Watch for acceptance letters from colleges LAST TIME TO TAKE THE ACT Complete enrollment paperwork for the college Take a campus tour of the college May 2015 Notify colleges by May 1st if you have been accepted and choose not to attend Send out official transcript to college Meet with academic advisor and financial advisor of the college to discuss any changes, additions, and course of plan for the fall!
