Technological Innovations 2000 - 2009

IPhone Released June 9, 2007 One of the first real “smartphones” released. Used an accurate touch screen that replaced almost all the buttons on the phone, a standard for almost all future smartphones. Combined the iPod with a desktop and phone, giving capabilities from all three. Changed the phone market forever, just look at every phone from then on.

Ubuntu Ubuntu released on October 20, 2004. It is an operating system much like Mac OSX or Windows. It is mostly open source which means anyone can edit its code and change ubuntu to fit their needs. This is unlike other operating systems as you can’t change Windows for example. Ubuntu is part of the OS Linux and has over 20 million users. It’s free!

BitCoin Bitcoin is an online cryptocurrency. It cannot be traced which makes it great for buying objects anonymously or illegally. Extremely valuable (1 bitcoin = $238.72) Is used in many digital stores, both legally and illegally. Viruses and Trojans can take over your computer and use your CPU power to mine for bitcoins.

IPod Released October 23, 2001 It was an MP3 player with capacity for over 1000 songs (5 GB) The IPod was very popular with the all ages as everyone loves music! Would lead to the IPod nano, IPod Touch, and the IPhone

Usb 2.0 Came out April of 2000 High speed (Usb 1.0 was low speed) 480 Megabytes per second (Usb 1.0 was only 1.5 Megabytes per second) Thats 320 times faster than USB 1.0 With Usb 1.0, it was almost impossible to have multiple devices plugged in at once because it would be too slow. With Usb 2.0, you could have DVD burners, digital cameras, and MP3 players all plugged in and used at once with them barely slowing down. The most common I/O port and is still used today.

Playstation 2 Came out March of 2000 Best selling computer of all time. 155 Million Units sold Influenced many game systems after it, like the XBOX and PS3

Apple Very important at the time Created iPod and iPhone during this time The company was almost dead, but the invention of the iPod revived them and made them very popular iPod made digital MP3 players a lot more popular iPhone made touch screen smartphones wildly popular, causing many companies to make their own touch screen smartphone

Sony Founded by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. Derived from the slang word “sonny” which means presentable/smart. It was founded in 1946. They are known for making cameras (which they are the third largest producers of), computers, video editing software, and video games, and many other products. Most teens know of Sony computer Entertainment, the branch of Sony that is responsible for making the hit Playstation line of consoles. It has also made smartphones under the Xperia brand name.
