In addition, Durban handles significant break bulk, dry bulk and chemical cargoes, and provides facilities for cruise liners, the SA Navy, and for fishing, service and recreational craft. The Shared Vision is a framework for the long term development of Durban as South Africa’s premier port city, providing for the maritime transportation needs of the greater Southern African economy; and describes a program of infrastructural expansions, land use plans and inland transport connections. 10 SHIP REPAIR, VESSEL CONSTRUCTION & BOAT BUILDING IN DURBAN HARBOUR AUGUST 2010 SUMMIT ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVE OF THE DURBAN PORT EXPANSION Shipbuilding activities provide a potentially rich source of employment and expenditure, but the industry is a cyclically unstable one, and spending benefits are far outweighed by those associated with cargo handling Ship repair activities also provide a potentially rich source of employment and expenditure, and the industry is a more stable one in the long term. Ship repair activities should be retained as an integral part of a diversified terminal port “Engagements with the ship repair industry are proceeding with a view to determining their long term plans, and to ensure that provision is made for accommodating the needs of this vital maritime service industry” – 2050 Vision
