1 Habits of the mind Presentation used to160 pupils in a lecture theatre. (pupils aged 13 – 18). Includes 3 short activities and a 30 sec utube clip. Margaret Miles

2 Notes for presenter only: Ask all audience to stand. Go through puzzle below. Ask those thinking of an elephant to sit down. (ie all should have answer 5 and therefore likely to think of an Elephant). Ask those still standing what animal they are thinking of - if it does not begin with E then they have been inaccurate !!

3 Think of a number (any number but easier if you keep it below say 30) Double the number Add 10 Divide the result by 2 Subtract the number you first thought of from your result You now have a number left…..

4 Transfer your number into a letter using : 1 = A 2= B 3 = C 4 = D ……etc

5 Think of a 4 legged animal starting with that letter.

10 For presenter : Show job advert Show application letter from Melissa Ask audience if they would interview Melissa Are there any errors in the letter ? Show next slide which highlights the errors Now say that you, as Mrs Watson, would not interview her as she is not accurate enough !

11 Gourmet Foods Work experience : Sales Assistant We are offering a place for a young student to undertake work experience in our busy delicatessen for 2 weeks during July. Please send an application letter explaining why you would like to do this work experience and what skills you are able to offer for this position. Please send your letter of application, by 1 st February to: Mrs Watson, HR Coordinator, Grove House, 12 King Street, Peterborough If your application is successful, you will be called for an interview on Thursday 12 th February – we will reimburse your travel expenses to the interview from your home – please give an indication of this cost.

12 12 Bodley Drive Oakham LE15 6FR 25 th January Dear Mr Watson, I would like to apply for the work experince position of sales assistant offered in your advertisement in the Rutland Times. I will complete my GCSEs this summer and plan to study the IB in the next two years. I am currently thinking about pursuing a career in retail and would therefore greatly benifit from the opportunity to work with your organisation in the sales department. I believe that I am good at working within a team following my experiences on various Duke Of Edinburgh expeditions within a group of 5 people. Occassionally I have worked alongside my aunt in her hotel, where I have learnt how to use an electronic cash till. I hope that you will consider me for this position which I believe I will reelly enjoy. If I am successful in being invited for interview I will travel by train from Oakham to Peterborough on Friday 12th – the cost of the return fare will be £ 75.00. Yours faithfully, Melissa Clark
