1
Get It Done!
2
1. A small country somewhere in Europe 2. The opposite of anti-crastination 3. A long word that’s hard to spell 4. The habit of putting things off, doing things at the last minute, or not finishing what you start 5. I don’t know- ask me later.
3
Are people always after you to get stuff done? Do you often have that freaky time is running out feeling? Have you ever told a teacher “the dog ate my homework” when you don’t even have a dog? Do you usually wait until the last minute to start things, then panic, melt down, and blow up at everyone around you?
4
1 in every 4 Americans thinks he or she is a total procrastinator. It’s not easy to admit you procrastinate and maybe you need a little help. Everyone procrastinates sometimes- even presidents. But it can be a hard habit to break You hardly notice it until you get that awful feeling of dread
5
More teachers More subjects More classrooms More chores at home More pressure in your after school activities More complicated friendships
6
When you have more to stay on top of you need habits that work “for you” not “against you” New habits give you ways to get stuff done quickly, get organized, get control of your schedule, and most of all get started.
7
Procrastination is a habit which means you behave in a way that’s automatic. You don’t think about it you just do it like biting your fingernails or cracking your knuckles. You say or think things like “I’ll do it later.” “I’ll get to it tomorrow.” “It can wait.” You get in the habit of “not doing”
8
You might make excuses And making excuses to other people or yourself can leave you feeling like a rat So why do people procrastinate? What matters is why you procrastinate So why do you procrastinate?
9
Are you weighed down? Grossed out? Stressed out? Too blasé? Worn out? Freaked out? Fed up? Found out? Spaced out?
10
Make a list of everything you think you need to do, chores, homework, tasks, projects everything. Ask someone to help you prioritize your list Put an A next to things that are super important, a B next to things that are less important, and a C next to things that can wait. Finally cross anything you really don’t need to do. Pick one of you’re a or B priorities and get it done today. (Homework assignment)
11
Some tasks are just plain disgusting... Hold your nose, grit your teeth and get it done. If it’s your job and you don’t do it, who will?
12
Slice your big difficult project into smaller, easier tasks. Some people call this “The Salami Technique” For example if you are supposed to learn 15 vocabulary words. Make three lists of five words each. Then learn one list at a time.
13
Impress all your friends with this word it means “bored with life” What you need is a motivator! A motivator is something you want and are willing to work for. It’s a reward you give your self for a job well done- a bonus- not a bribe. Pick things that are fun and that you don’t get to do every day.
14
Know your “prime time” When do you work best? When are you most alert? Experiment to find out when you are at your peak.
15
Fear Fact #1- Nobody succeeds at everything. Fear Fact #2- Everybody fails sometimes. Look around for a role model. This can be someone you know or someone you heard about or read about. Think about why you admire that person.
16
Fear Fact #3- The world won’t end if you make a mistake. Fear Fact #4- Perfection is impossible. Some experts believe that half of everything we learn comes from making mistakes. Instead seeing mistakes as failures, see them as something you learn from. What would you have done differently? How might you do better next time?
17
Fear Fact #5- Not deciding is deciding. Got a decision to make? Toss a coin or do eeny meeny miney moe. Or write things you need to do on slips of paper, put them in a hat, mix them up and pull one out without peeking first.
18
Fear Fact #6- You’re not really afraid of success. You’re afraid of what might happen if you succeed. List the worst things that can happen if you succeed. Then list the best things. If you still don’t think it’s good to give something your best try, share your list with someone you trust. Fear of success will keep you from succeeding in life.
19
Fear Fact #7- Sometimes when you avoid something scary you lose out on a chance to shine or have fun. Write down something you have been putting off. The write down the reason. What are you afraid of? Is there someone you can talk to about your fear? Could you with help take a deep breath and face your fear?
20
List some funny rules you’d come up with if you were an adult. Like school is optional, it’s against the law to serve Brussels sprouts and kids can stay up as long as they want. Laughter can be a motivator. It lightens your mood and adds more fun to your life.
21
Talk with an adult you trust about your worries or sadness Ask for help if you need it No matter how bad you feel you’re not alone and someone out there will care and will listen
22
Not paying attention? One way to get rid of the procrastination habit is to replace it with great new habits that help you feel more in charge of your life. That’s what you’re about to do.
23
Draw a slip from the hat You have 1 minute to write down how you will do this
24
Try making a life list A list of dream come true things you’d like to do someday Think about it…A life list could change your life for the better. Make your sample list now. See how many goals you can come up with now and add to your list over time. Having a list like this is motivating. It can make you feel good about getting things done.
25
Get up and do 1 task you’ve been putting off tonight (Homework) You’ll feel energized and you’ll be able to say “I did it!” Even if it’s just a small thing you’ll know you’ve accomplished it. This can give you motivation to do another task and another. And before you know it you’ll be saying…See ya later, procrastinator!
