2 e-mail: childrens.trust@bromley.gov.uk website: www.childrenstrust.bromleypartnerships.org What is Information Sharing? “It is vital that practitioners understand when, why and how they should share information so that they can do so confidently and appropriately as part of their day-to-day practice…”  The 1988 Data Protection act is not a barrier to sharing information, but a framework to ensure personal information is shared appropriately.  It is important that people remain confident that their personal information is kept secure, however there can be significant consequences to not sharing information

Is the information confidential? Do you have consent to share? Is there sufficient public interest to share the information? Are you sharing information appropriately and securely? Is there a clear and legitimate purpose to share information? Have you properly recorded your information sharing decision?

Remember the Data Protection Act is not a barrier to sharing information 2. Be open and honest with the person from the outset 3. Seek advice where in doubt 4. Share with consent where appropriate and where possible, respect the wishes of those who do not consent to share (unless there is sufficient need to override the lack of consent) 5. Always consider the safety and well-being of the person and others 6. Ensure information is accurate and up to date, necessary, shared with the appropriate people, in a timely fashion and shared securely 7. Record the reasons for the decision – whether it is to share or not.

9 e-mail: childrens.trust@bromley.gov.uk website: www.childrenstrust.bromleypartnerships.org Caldicott Principles The Caldicott Principles were drawn up in 1997 due to concerns in the NHS over the development of information technology and its capacity to share information rapidly and extensively.  Define Purposes  Use the minimum information possible  Access to personal information on a need to know basis  Staff must be aware of their responsibilities  Use only when lawful  Use anonymised information, if possible Bromley has a Caldicott Guardian – please contact the Workforce Development team for their details
