4 G&P -- Stuckart Choosing Roles 4/23/2017 Have class read aloud relevant sections from the “Steps in a Trial” handout Direct examination Cross examination Closing arguments Teacher directs students to discuss Roles (& Alternate Roles) for 5 minutes NOTE: Opening/Closing Attorneys will have some additional responsibilities (they will troubleshoot & monitor others to make sure everyone remains consistent with their Theory of the Case) Teacher records Roles / Alternate Roles

G&P -- Stuckart Role Work 4/23/2017 Opening + Closing Attorneys Work together to craft complimentary opening/closing statements Circulate among team members to troubleshoot & check consistency with your Theory of the Case Witness 1 + Direct Examination 1 Witness 2 + Direct Examination 2 Witness 3 + Direct Examination 3 Work in attorney-witness pairs to draft a series of questions (include the basic facts as well as key points!) Cross Examination 1, 2 & 3 Work together to craft a series of leading questions for your witnesses Teacher goes through instructions one-by-one As each group/pairing is revealed, have students move to an area by themselves Students are to write DETAILED questions & answers, etc. Direct/cross/witnesses: Backward design for questions – start with the answers you need to make your case, then write questions to get those answers NOTE: Stress new job for Opening/Closing Attorneys (2nd bullet)
