Notes Atoms (Part 2): All matter is made up of atoms The different types of atoms are called elements Atoms are made of 3 sub-atomic particles… …protons (are the blue circles) …neutrons (are the green circles) …electrons (are the orange circles) Note: Protons and neutrons are found in the center area called the nucleus Note: In atoms the number of protons and electrons are always the same (3 in this case) SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Here is a model of one lithium atom Nucleus PRESS THE RIGHT-ARROW BUTTON ON YOUR KEYBOARD TO ADVANCE THROUGH THE PRESENTATION

Protons: positive charge, found in the nucleus of atoms TT he number of protons is the atomic number (3 in this case) Note: In atoms the number of protons & electrons are the same Neutrons: no charge, also found in the nucleus of atoms Electrons: negative charge, found in electron shells in the electron cloud SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Legend =protons =neutrons =electrons Notes: Sub-Atomic Particles

Atomic Mass AA toms are very small particles of matter, and everything that is made of matter has mass MM ost of the mass of an atom is found in the nucleus A bout 99.9% of the mass of an atom is in the nucleus Nuclear Particles TT he two particles in the nucleus, protons and neutrons, make up 99.9 % of the mass of the atom SPI 0807.9.1 Atoms Legend =protons =neutrons =electrons Notes 99.9% 3 Li Lithium 6.9 The atomic mass for this atom is 6.9 It is displayed on the periodic table like this.

Electrons are located in the electron cloud in areas called electron shells This atom has 2 electron shells.
